As you may have heard, there was an accident at the annual scout Jamboree in Virginia.
One of those killed was Scott Powell. Here I have a tribute to Scott written by a friend of mine, James Pendleton.
I haven’t seen Scott Powell since I moved out of Alaska in 1992.
That ...

Bored kids are choking themselves to get a buzz?
Whatever happened to spinning around in the yard until you get dizzy and fall down?
When I was in 3rd grade (I think), I got into a contest with a classmate to see who could hold their breath the longest. I won, ...

For years, I've had an aversion to sauerkraut because, well, it's basically rotten cabbage.
I remember trying it as a kid, and not liking it very much, so I put it on the "Foods to Never Eat" list, right after mushrooms and beets (tied for Numero Uno.)
After watching a special on ...

I grew up out in the boondocks. (As if Ennis wasn't boondocks enough, we lived 6 miles out of town, and our nearest neighbor was a couple of miles away, and going up there to play was out of the question.)
At any rate, when my brother and I were ...

I know that y'all think that your kids are the best in the world, but you're wrong. Mine are.
In the past few days, both of them have shown nothing but affection for their new sister (which will surely change, and soon at that), and understand what is going on, ...

Here it is, already Wednesday, and I'm just now getting around to a recap of the weekend.
For the curious, here's how it went:

Craig: Anything happening?
Spousal Unit™: Nope.

This is very brief, as I am on the run with phone calls and other items, but Kiran Lee was born at 0320 this morning, and weighed in at a scant 5 lbs, 8.4 oz, and measured 19" long.
Don't let the size fool you, though, as she is a scrapper ...

I got in a discussion with my Spousal Unit™ the other day, and she claimed that I never said anything good about her on this here blog.
Naturally, I was indignant and said, "Well, of course I sing your praises. Almost daily, in fact."
So, I plugged in the phrase "Spousal ...

Female: "Did you make coffee this morning?"
Male Answer: "Yes. So?"

Female: "I think my car is running low on gas."
Male Answer: "So? Fill it up."

Do not — I repeat, do not — under any circumstance allow your 8-month pregnant wife to watch those gut-wrenching news stories about fetal surgery, and the attendant successes and failures.
I'm just saying.

(Scads of bonus points for nailing that reference.)
However, a month earlier, in April of '41, and on the 16th to be exact, something happened in the Sprout family that was a little bit more immediate, and has had a huge impact on my own life.
That is to say, my dad ...

We attended the Mass at St. Patrick's co-cathedral for the Pope's funeral.
We had the distinct pleasure of having Randy join us for the occasion.
The children made it through the service without doing anything drastic, and they actually elicited compliments from neighboring pews. This, of course, made my chest balloon ...

Re: End Of Life
If I get smashed up, the only time I want you to pull the plug is if my EEG is unequivocally flat. If there is any doubt whatsoever; I want to live.

If someone ever abducts and abuses one of my kids, I ...
