What? We're out of compliance with NCLB in Montana?
Inconceivable.
I've said it before: Local Control Is Good™

In the first of a 13-part series of articles beginning in today's (Sunday, July 30) New York Times, "New research from around the world has begun to reveal a picture of humans today that is so different from what it was in the past that scientists say they are ...

A rising tide lifts all boats. Here is a great example.

John Clayton recently posted this quote as an argument why schools should be public:

Can they make them.pdf
This article appeared in the Montana Lawyer. I wish this fellow had shared his thoughts with the whole state instead of just the lawyers. I think his thoughts are very appropriate.

Once again, the puplic school levy goes down in flames.
I can't much comment on the 16% turnout, since I was one of the 84% who stayed home, albeit unintentionally. I reminded myself to remind myself about it, then promptly forgot.

As I have mentioned repeatedly, the school district here in town is in full-blown beg-a-thon mode.
In fact, we just got a letter from them explaining why they need the money. Here's the return address:

We haven't thrown enough money at the school, is what this opinion piece says.
One of the arguments she advances seems to be that since the school is not spending as much as allowed by statute, we should go ahead and kick in some more.
In another tortured twist of ...

Charging tuition for Kindergarten at the public school.
Thanks, of course, to NCLB.
Repeat after me: Local control and local standards are a Good Thing™.

When you throw more money at something, said money has to come from somewhere.
Usually, it comes directly from the taxpayers, but this time it'll be a little more indirect in the form of tuition increases.
I read The Kaimin to hear what the students think of their tuition increases, and the ...

As you probably all know, I'm not a big fan of public education, and spend quite a bit of time talking about what I see as problems with the system.
Lest I be known as a purveyor of only the negative, I just wanted to point out that I had a ...

In class today, the subject of U.S. Circuit Courts came up.
During the discussion, the prof briefly mentioned that there was a movement to create a 12th Circuit Court.
He explained that the reason this movement was afoot was because there is an argument that (and I quote), "The 9th Circuit is ...

The state is not paying its fair share for primary and secondary public education in Montana and is forcing local property taxpayers to pick up the ever-increasing tab, plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the state of Montana claim.
Let me see if I can rephrase that: Since the state is ...
