Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

April 22nd, 2008 | by Craig |

We recently had a spirited discussion about what role blogs may play in the coming years. In that post, we toyed around with the idea of a complementary relationship between bloggers and reporters.

The other role that I think blogs could play is that of watchdog, as they do already. There is a lot of stuff that slips by, under and around stories on a daily basis. In fact, if you’ve ever been involved with something that’s been covered on TV or in print, you often wonder if the reporter attended the same event as you did.

More importantly, though, we can keep folks honest.

I give you this great example from Warner Todd Huston, where a CNN reporter shows his backside during an interview.

Normally, most of the “naughty bits” will end up on the cutting room floor, but now, thanks to bloggers, we know what is really going on out there.

And it ain’t pretty.

Your Latin, it is impressive. The closest I’m fluent in is the sort that produces bacon. Oh well, you’re learnin’ me sumthin’. Anyway, what’s the O/U on the call-out for the journalism student’s truthfulness? Those CNN reporters are, after all, to be given much reverence, respect, and rose petals in the toilet.

If there was somebody willing to pay us to blog it would be a different thing.

We’d all have plenty of time then, and we could give the dead-tree-editions (Thanks Ed) some competition.

Reporters get paid, but there’s no money in blogging!

Eric - I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but no one is ever going to pay you for your thoughts. Ever.
