You’d Have To Be From Montana
January 21st, 2008 | by Craig |But did you read this headline, “Gusts a Big Timber fixture since 1947,” and find yourself surprised with the content.
For my out-of-state friends, it’s a long-running joke that the wind always blows in Big Timber. (And Livingston, Great Falls, Ennis, Choteau, and just about any town on the Front.)

Fortunately, around here, the gusts don’t stay long. They just stop by for a visit, then go back to Big Timber.

Only since 1947?
What, there wasn’t anyone in Big Timber before that to notice?

I’ve always said that Livingston is the only place where wind is measured in degrees. That is, the amount of degrees telephone poles are bent from the perpendicular. A 45-degree wind is a mild summer breeze. A 90-degree wind is cause for some concern.
