If’n You Didn’t Know Better

October 26th, 2007 | by Craig |

You might think that this came from the Right:

I suppose it was inevitable: in the wake of the government’s response to Hurricane Katrina, people have taken the initiative to help others in a time of crisis outside of official (and officially inept) channels. Forget FEMA, it’s now up to us to save each other from natural disaster.

It gives me a glimmer of hope for the Sinestra.

The sooner you realize that the government can’t — and often won’t — help you, and that it’s up to you to keep yourself and your family safe, the sooner you are on the Right track.

I may be going out on a limb here, but I believe she was thinking this was a *bad* thing. If’n that’s correct though, awareness is still a good thing.

Seemed to me that she was railing against the partisanship of the site she linked, but I could be wrong, too.

With the exception of the blurb about who created the site, I don’t see that there’s any overt “preaching” on there, which makes her comparison to missionaries telling.

Still and all, I like the sentiment behind that graf, and I’ll keepsome hopein my cold, black heart that someone will follow it to its logical conclusion. :)

FEMA performed poorly during Katrina because the Bush Administration deliberately screwed up FEMA.

    Period.

If this were coming from the right, it, well, wouldn’t have been written. Because those on the right more or less assume that it’s up to us to save ourselves and hope someone comes along to help at some point. In other words, this isn’t news, it’s the way things are.

FEMA performed poorly during Katrina not because anyone screwed up a good concept, but because the concept is screwed up to begin with.

    Period.

I remember reading this article back in 2000…

    http://www.fee.org/publications/the-freeman/article.asp?aid=1650

…and it struck me as a great example of the capacity and ability of the private sector to address disasters.

It’s amazing that Americans have almost completely turned their backs on this approach to the world…

    Maybe this is why…
