Lack of Econ Education at Work

October 12th, 2007 | by Craig |

Someone get Granny Nan Pelosi on the phone, Right. The F***. Now.

There’s a GODDAMNED TRAGEDY afoot in that Hannah Montana fans are having to pay GODDAMNED HIGH PRICES for tickets.

[Mother Maureen] Von Minden lives in Florida — in “Hurricane Alley.” “We’re hurricane people,” she said. “It’s price gouging … price gouging at its best. It would have been my daughters’ first concert for both of them, and we were looking forward as a family to going, and we can’t,” she said.

Because it’s not a privilege to go to a concert, it’s a GODDAMNED RIGHT.

What kind of country do we live in when our precious children cannot go to a GODDAMNED CONCERT?

My family has been looking forward to going to Disney World for a long time, but we can’t since the airline tickets are so GODDAMNED EXPENSIVE as are the GODDAMNED LODGING and the GODDAMNED TICKETS.

We can all say that we dislike ticket scalpers, but the fact of the matter is that you should really think of them as the Econ Police, enforcing the laws of supply and demand.

The profits go to brokers, not the artists or promoters. CNN tried to contact several different ticket brokers that did not return phone calls or e-mails.

Well, not really. If they weren’t making a profit, they wouldn’t be doing it. Do you think that if the artist’s accountants, lawyers, bookkeepers, roadies, and various hangers-on were running at a loss they’d say, “Hell yeah, let’s do a show for nothing! It’s for the children.”

(Maybe we can levy an additional tax on Schmidt Beer to make up the difference.)

The promoters come off looking like the good guys since they horribly underprice tickets, then sue the bastard scalpers for making a GODDAMNED PROFIT. The artist, meanwhile, stands conveniently above the fray.

Now you may think I’m being facetious about this, but this is big time news. It made the front page at CNN.com.

Besides that, 67% of American children are watching Hannah Montana, so the principle of Majority Rule (a/k/a “Populism”) says that Hannah Montana tickets are their God-given right.

I guess I shouldn’t be ranting about this. After all, if Hannah Montana tickets are the top issue facing the nation right now, then we’re sitting pretty, aren’t we?

Out of everyone, the only person who shows any GODDAMNED WISDOM is the 10-year old sister:

Lawsuits will not put smiles on the faces of disappointed kids and parents. But Casey, 10, said she has a suggestion on how to afford Montana tickets, and it falls on her 12-year-old sister: “Cara needs to get a job!”

Saith St. Denis Leary, “Life sucks. Get a f*****g helmet.”

Imagine this eventually happening to gas prices. Gas sells for $2.40/gallon, and several rednecks go buy it all up, and then charge $40-$90/gallon.

…Or something tells me *that* was the plan all along.

Keep you eyes peeled for a congressional investigation into this matter. Let’s just hope Graeme Frost isn’t a Hanna Montana fan..

You like Disneyland? You’d take your kids there?

You’ll probably remember the Seattle band that switched from grunge to Adult Contemporary, Pearl Jam, and their hullaballoo about ticket brokers, etc. a few years back, well, they actually did put on a no-BS free concert way back when (1992).

Best idea those guys ever had. While I doubt that if some of the other large bands did it, Ticketmaster would drop dead, it’s still a pretty cool idea.

As it is, I’ve always just gone to the venue and bought my tickets there, avoiding said fee. Maybe if mama-drama wasn’t so lazy, she’d do the same.

I think you missed the whole point of the article. It is about playing fair, not rigging computers, jamming others chances, skipping ahead. I waited outside a ticket sales center 3 hours (second in line) and did not get tickets. all because a theif stole my spot in line and “robbed” me of my chance to buy tickets.

Are you OK? I was GODDAMNED worried for a minute.

PS: Excellent use of a Learyism.

This is classic, Craig, and your write-up is hilarious!

Alas, there is ALWAYS a good economic explanation for ticket prices (or any price of any good or service)…
