Your Giggle for Today

If you’re of an age, you probably remember the “Encyclopedia Brown” stories by Donald Sobol.

This was brought to my mind recently as I was talking to the eldest child about potential reading material. She said that she liked mysteries, and I suggested that she might like Encyclopedia Brown.

Some of you will no doubt be surprised that I was never very good at solving the cases, since they really required an eye for detail.

The tale would end along the lines of “HOW DID ENCYCLOPEDIA KNOW THAT THE PAINTING WAS A FAKE?” And it was up to you to remember that waaaay back, 3 pages ago, there was a blurb about an African swallow, the feathers of which were used to paint during the period in question, but the horsehair brush in Bugs Meany’s pocket was a dead giveaway.

Or something like that. My memory’s pretty fuzzy on that.

Anyway, I found a spoof of Encyclopedia Brown, and it’s called Wikipedia Brown and the Case of the Captured Koala.

It brought tears to my eyes.

“Bugs Meany was the leader of a gang of tough older boys. They called themselves the Tigers. They should have called themselves the Heathens. They were doomed to eternal torment in a subterranean lake of fire.”

That’s funny stuff right there. Almost got A&W on the keyboard with that.

I started my own detective agency thanks to the wacky doings of Encyclopedia, Sally, and the unrelenting hijinx. Man, that was a looooong time ago.

That’s the best laugh I’ve had all week.
