My Low Point as a Steeler Fan

August 9th, 2007 | by Craig |

I’ve been a Steelers fan for 30 years now. I’ve suffered through Cliff Stoudt, Mark Malone and watched Neil O’Donnell (*spit*) earn an Honorary MVP for the Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX. I held out hope through the Kordell Stewart years.

But this . . . this is the lowest of the low.

The Steelers have chosen the name “Steely McBeam” for their mascot.

Steely McBeam.

My daughter’s cat’s nickname is Fatty McFatbutt. This nomenclature should be reserved for farce.

I’m stunned. ‘Burghers, how could you do this to us?

At Kissing Suzy Kolber, Christmas Ape says it far better, and with more cuss words.

[UPDATE]:  Oh, and Bubby Brister, too. How could I forget Bubby, except for him being mostly forgettable, except his name.

The fact that the Steelers even have a mascot is unfathomable. We’re talking about the Steelers here. The team that has no cheerleaders. I bet if the Steelers lose the home opener Steely McBeam will be run out of town.

Dude, my Broncos got Barrel Man … (okay, he’s actually really cool, but still …)

I do like the Bill Cowher chin on, hopefully soon to be, “Steely McJobless.”

The Arizona Diamondbacks — who are named after a rattlesnake — went with a mascot named Baxter the Bobcat. The reason for this was that the ballpark they play in was at the time called the Bank One Ballpark, which the locals referred to as “The BOB” (hence the BOBcat). The name of the park has since been changed to Chase Field (thanks to bank mergers, although the name fits since that’s was Diamondback outfielders have been doing a lot of over the last few years, thanks to nost of the starting pitchers and the arsonists disguised as a bullpen), but the mascot kept his job. (And to locals still refer to the ballpark as The BOB. BTW, most of the acrobatic mascots were members of Arizona State’s mens gymnastic program, including both of guys who’ve dressed up as the Phoenix Suns’ Gorilla, a mascot that makes as much sense to his team’s nickname as Baxter. Must be something in the water here.)

As for the Stillers mascot, a hard-working steel worker makes sense, but you’re right about one thing: That name has got to go. (Although the best mascot the Steelers could possibly have would be somebody dressed up as the late, great, Saint Art Rooney.)

That is a terrible name. However, as a Chargers fan, I suggest living through Ryan Leaf was worse.
