Bill Owens for President

Simply for calling a spade a spade.

I always love it when PETA shows us who they really are.

I don’t know what warped world they live in. Bill Maur a prominent PETA member and the host of Politically Incorrect was on the Jay Leno show with Jack Hanna. Bill was livid that Jay would have him on the same show as Jack Hanna. Maur went on to complain about the cruelty of having tigers in captivity. Hanna tried to explain that this species was extinct in the wild. That did not matter to Maur his position was they would be better off extinct than in captivity. On a side note Maur is an admitted pot smoker. Hmmmm…..

Interesting. I have queried ordinary women who are vehemently anti-fur as to why, exactly, do they feel okay wearing leather shoes and eating meat? They’re not essential to life, in fact one could have a grand old time without them (I was an opportunistic vegetarian in grad school). None of the ladies used this PETA justification- they just didn’t have a reason beside “It’s bad.” I think for some it’s just a convenient excuse to feel morally superior to others who can afford real fur. Class warfare and animal rights all rolled into one! A real leftist two-fer.

In this way, I think PETA is at least less disingenuous than the anti-fur crowd. Furthermore, the Humane Society doesn’t care about anything but pets, oh sorry, I meant companion animals. The fur was flying over P-Diddy’s clothing line using real instead of fake. All the Humane Society wanted to know was- is it raccoon dog or real raccoon fur. I found that very strange. It appeared (to me) that they only cared if the animal was a pet.

Nobody light a match in this comment thread… the strawmen are going to set the whole place ablaze….

Anyways, I think PETA’s cause is noble (not the part about wanting everyone to be vegetarian…), it’s entirely unfortunate that they prefer to give themselves an image of extremism. They could do a lot of good if they weren’t busy demonizing themselves.

You keep using that word “strawmen.”

I do not think it means what you think it means.

PETA’s cause is not noble; they are fools who think that animals are equal to humans, and should be treated as such.

If you’re interested in a group that actually does some good for animals, the ASPCA is the best of the bunch.

By not helping the cows who are doomed to slaughter, PETA and the Human Society are blaming the victim.

When else did I use that word “strawmen”? If I’ve overused it, dah well. My point was that the people in your comment thread are arguing with imaginary people, simplifying and creating their arguments for them only to knock them down.

Other than that, when I talk about their cause, I refer to the “ethical treatment of animals.” Sounds noble enough to me. Go ahead and ignore that last part of my comment if you like, it probably makes me easier to argue with… even though we pretty much agree on this one.

And I should also say what set me off here was Dani using this as an opportunity to go off on the Humane Society, and organization that I have a great deal of respect for.

Sorry, but there’s not even a dime’s worth of difference between HSUS and PETA these days.

Local Humane Societies are a different story, but you’ll find that many of the principals of the HSUS are tied very closely to the PETArds.

    Here

Still, the insertion of a Princess Bride line was too perfect an opportunity to pass up, I’ll wager. But I wouldn’t make a wager with a Sicilian when death is on the line. Just so we’re clear.

Wellnow, technically he said “strawman” and not “strawmen.”

Still and all, I think it’ll get him into trouble someday.

pssst…. I’m right here… you don’t have to refer to me in the third person…

Rodents of unusual size? I don’t think they exist…

Steve, I actually got to use that line once. I was on a conference call with several hill staffers talking about the USDA Rural Utility Service (RUS). It was referred to in acronym form, and I threw that in in the pause immediately following the RUS. I heard one person start snorting - that was all I needed. I also wasn’t invited back for further calls on the subject.

That’s quite possibly the best story I’ve ever heard. Well done.
