An Easy Joke

November 18th, 2006 | by Craig |

I had to scratch my head when I saw this story the other day about the incidence of depression at the University of Montana campus.

Depression and suicidal thoughts among University of Montana students reached the point that university administrators recently decided to hire a psychiatrist, in an effort to help stem the problem.

Now, of course, the easy joke is that it would seem to be logical that a hotbed of liberalism would also be a hotbed of mental health problems. I personally think that the words “liberalism” and “mental disorder” could be used interchangeably.

Now that that’s out of the way, it does seem a strange phenomenon, and I have to wonder what’s going on up there. Is it an honest-to-goodness phenomenon? Or is it that many people are using their mental health as the reason they can’t hack it? Heaven knows I’ve seen that happen.

I’m not trying to cast aspersions, by any means. Depression is a serious issue. I know. If these kids are, in fact, depressed, then I’m glad to hear that they’re getting help. If, however, they’re just using it as the excuse du jour of why they’re dropping out of college, then they’re really just helping to minimize the real issue.

As Michael Savage so often says on his radio program: “Liberalism is a mental disorder.” I increasingly believe that there is some truth to that…
