Today’s WSJ article eulogizing Mr. Friedman had some interesting observations of him from other economists. James Galbraith, prof of gov’t at U of Texas and son of John Kenneth Galbraith, the well-known Keynsian economist, said that “Milton Friedman didn’t make a distinction b/n the big gov’t of the People’s Republic of China and the big gov’t of the U.S.” In other words, democratic socialism is superior to totalitarian socialism, even though the outcome, in the minds of economists like Friedman, is quite similar. Several paragraphs ahead in the story, the author quotes from Friedman’s book “Capitalism and Freedom” — “a society which is socialist cannot be democratic, in the sense of guaranteeing individual freedom.” One can only hope that more Americans will learn from Friedman than from Galbraith.

But that is wrong on its face - European countries and Canada, are socialist and guarantee individual freedom, are in fact liberal democracies.

You don’t get it, Mark.
