23:58?

October 8th, 2006 | by Craig |

The Doomsday Clock stands at 23:53.

I think we might have just jumped ahead a few minutes.

Cue the blame Bush chorus in 5…4…3…2…

[UPDATE]:  OK, I’ve had some time to digest this, and this is one of those moments where you can feel the world change. I remember this feeling, vaguely, seeing the last of the troops come home from Vietnam (I was young, but I remember lots of people talking about it and thinking, this is important), the Solidarity movement in Poland, the fall of the Berlin Wall, WTC ‘93 and, of course, 9/11, just to name a few. The next few days will tell us more on the fallout (bad pun), and what is to come, so I’m not going to get too excited. Events like this need a couple of days to settle down, and I think it’s wise to wait until more information comes in. Just my $.02.

[UPDATE 2]:  Anyone want to take the over/under on the dingbats saying that the whole thing is a Rove/Cheney orchestrated event designed to focus the attention away from Mark Foley, etc.? I’ll take the under at about 30 minutes ago.

I have no clue how this is going to play out…but I suspect that it will not be as momentous as many pundits have predicted. I hope.

You know what Craig, I would not suggest that this is a ploy by Cheney/Rove/Bush. You know why? It is scaring the hell out of me. The NKs developed nuclear weapons under their watch while they chose to suspend talks on the issue and waste our time fighting a f****** religious war in some God-forsaken desert.

It is scary as hell and I don’t think that we have the leadership to make it better. I am going out back to dig a hole in the sand, then I will proceed to stick my head into it.

Ummm…no. It had been going on for a long time.

The Federation of American Scientists has a timeline.

There’s plenty of blame to go around.

    Craig,

This is true, but when did they complete it? Who termed them as the axis, effectively cutting off meaningful negotiations with them? Sure, other presidents did not completely deal with the situation as needed (including Clinton). I will reitereate the statement though:

Who termed them as the axis, effectively cutting off meaningful negotiations with them?

    Pop quiz:

The US offered to enter into multilateral talks when?

    September of this year.

    And who rejected those overtures?

    NorK.

    Alrighty, then.

I am by no means defending or supporting NK, it is a nation led by an absolute lunatic.

Are you really claiming that this administration has dealt with the issue effectively?
