No Such Thing As Bad Publicity

August 28th, 2006 | by Craig |

I just got off the phone with John Adams of the Missoula Independent, who is doing a feature about blogging, presumably to appear in Wednesday’s Thursday’s edition.

I’ll keep you posted because I do love reading about me.

He interviewed me on Friday and said the feature would be printed in the Thursday edition.

I think he also interviewd Singer, Jay, and a few more.

I was wondering who else was on the list. Glad you were on there, Dave.

He’s an odd man to talk to (thereby guarenteeing I won’t be mentioned in the article). Very “Kolchak-esque”. But then again, we bloggers are kinda wierd, though I don’t think any of us will suck out his soul or seek unearthly revenge. I could be wrong about that, you never know …

Yea, I had a 45 minute conversation with him Friday myself. It will be interesting to see the article and see what he decided to use.

Sounds like he’ll definitely have a wide cross-section of the state’s blogging community.

I look forward to reading it.

This is a little…scratch that… a LOT weird for me to be reading all this speculation on what will appear in my story TWO DAYS before it hits the stands. I have to warn you, not everyone who I talked to is going to appear in the feature. I just don’t want everyone rushing to racks…well, I suppose you’ll all read it on the web save for Touchstone…looking for examples of how I misquoted you. Oh boy this is going to be weird…and Wulfgar, Kolchak? as in the Night Stalker? oh boy………

I wasn’t in the best form on the phone, so the cutting room floor is probably a good place for me.

It’s not about who was “best” at anything. It’s about the scope of the story and which particular blogs fit into that scope. A big difference between blogs and newspapers, is we don’t have the space or the luxury of writing everthing and WHATEVER we want. Sometimes I interview dozens of people before I even know what the best angle is. For almost every story I write, I interview far more people than ever end up quoted in the final piece. A lot of times interviews provide background information that is useful to me in terms of forming ideas and shaping the context, but the actual interview material doesn’t fit the scope of that particular story, or there just isn’t room. In this case, after interviewing dozens of bloggers I decided that the most compelling angle for this particular feature involved only a handful of you. So, all of that said, I’ll be curious to read your insightful analysis of my piece…or, I guess I’ll have to take my bitter medicine in the blogosphere. ;-).

Thanks to all who took time out of their days to talk to me. I very much appreciated it, and I truely enjoyed talking to all of you.

    Cheers.

    John,

You did well. I am sure that we all appreciate it. I, personally would much rather have seen Craig than that troll Eric Coobs, but it was your piece. I enjoyed seeing pictures of, and reading about, me. I am sure that everyone enjoyed that equally well :) We all knew that I was a predictable redundant cheerleading serial blogger anyway.

Thanks for treating the matter seriously and giving a good perspective on it.
