July 4th, 2006 | by Craig |We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. –That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. —Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

I’m sorry but it seems to me that all the 4th is about is fireworks and keeping your neighbors up until 2 in the morning. I dread the 4th because I value peace and quiet. It’s the worst holiday on the calendar.

From my perspective, Halloween is the worst holiday on the calendar.
I am not a Christian and do not celebrate Halloween (it’s the celebration of the evening before All Hallows Day, now referred to as All Saints Day), yet I have to endure for several hours all those who ring the bell or knock on the door seeking “treats”. This, too, has been known to get the neighborhood dogs barking, to add to the evening’s enjoyment!

I’d have to say that the way the 4th is celebrated places it at the bottom of my favorite holidays list. When you have a 3 year old and a 1 year old asleep upstairs and Joe 6 Pack across the street is up until all hours of the night arbitrarily firing off mini-munitions in his endless arsenal of baby-waking fireworks, you can get a bit annoyed by it all.
I’m all for the celebration of your independence, but I think that a good number of people just view the 4th as “Fireworks Day” with no real thought about what it means.

Fireworks shows are great, for about three minutes. Then they get boring, but they go on and on and on and on and on - think of all the money wasted.
