Boom in Ethanol Reshapes Economy of Heartland

Today’s New York Times has a good article on the different effects that ethanol production is having in the grain producing areas of the U.S.  (Note: You may have to register with the New York Times to access the article, but this is a no-fee registration.)

    Ethanol is a pipedream

    a boondoggle

    Talk about corporate welfare!!!

What’s interesting about this is that the Progressive States Network (PSN) apparently supports ethanol production as “clean power alternatives for energy independence”. Consider the fact, however, that there is no way ethanol would make it’s way into the energy market without massive gov’t subsidies or mandates (consider Montana’s mandate from the 2005 Legislative Session — SB 293). How do you get massive gov’t subsidies or mandates? You lobby for them. Indeed, multinational companies like Archers Daniel Midland are lobbying hard for such gov’t largesse/coercion and stand to profit in the billions. Also consider the fact that David Sirota is one of the founders of PSN and the author of Hostile Takeover, an expose on the corruption that results from corporate-government collusion. So, I suppose, corporate-government collusion is OK as long as it’s for the right reasons, e.g. gov’t subsidized/coerced alternative energy.

From the looks of it, Sirota and PSN are hypocrites….
