For Me, But Not For Thee
June 1st, 2006 | by Craig |CHRISTIANS: We would like to teach our own special sex ed, emphasizing abstinence until marriage, no safe sex, and the inherent sinfulness of homosexuality. Among other things, of course.
MULTI-CULTIS: Denied! That’s not only bigoted, but mean spirited, non-inclusive and downright hateful to others. Did we say hateful? THEOCRACY!
MUSLIMS: We would like to teach our own special sex ed, emphasizing abstinence until marriage, no safe sex, and the inherent sinfulness of homosexuality. Among other things, of course.
MULTI-CULTIS: Alright, then. Carry on.

That’s about right. Multiculturalism preaches tolerance for all, yet breeds contempt of certain worldviews. One would think that multiculturalists would want everyone to be a part of the mosaic of race and diversity — “multi” seems to imply that all cultures are included. But “‘right wingers” want to force their worldview on us, so they don’t deserve to be part of the gang. They’re neo-fascists! And liberal multiculturalists aren’t forcing their worldview on anyone? Ya, right! You see, one is admitted to the multiculturalist club if, and only if, one is a left winger. In fact, multicultural diversity is simply another code word — double speak — for left wing thinking.

Multiculturalists don’t allow Christians to have their own sex ed classes in their private schools?

My eldest goes to private school, and trust me, multi-culti is alive and kicking there.

In what sense? It’s hardly inconsistent to argue for the sex ed (or any policies) you want taught in a school you’re sending your children to and to not care about what some other private school does. The attacks on Christian sex ed (as you put it) are largely over public school programs. It seems to me that you’d need people attempting from the outside to force Christian private schools to abandon whatever Christianity-centric policy they were pursuing and then not doing the same thing when faced with an Islamic private school. That would be worthy of condemnation.

Humorously, the main debate over sex ed isn’t over abstinence only or safe sex. It’s between abstinence-only and abstince-emphasis. Telling people to use condoms to prevent pregnancy and disease while emphasizing that abstinence is a healthy emotional choice that is the only surefire way of avoiding pregnancy and disease.
Education shouldn’t be seen as triggering sin. In fact, that’s a rather Medieval mindset. I’m sure every person commenting on this site understands the concept of murder and covering up the crime. That shouldn’t be seen as turning us all into potential murderers.
Besides, even married couples need to be properly informed about contraception.
All that said, if a Catholic school wants to teach Catholic values, I may exercise my 1st Amendment rights and scoff, but I’ll hardly try to force it do otherwise. Same thing with a Muslim school.

Not at all. The rather simplicist attitudes of some Christians and “Muslims” are equally idiotic in my eyes.
Of course abstinence is the only 100% effective method of birth control/STD prevention. Only a moron would argue otherwise. But I also know enough to recognize that hiding and suppressing sexuality and sexual energy is NOT the way to prevent pregnancy and disease. Ignorance never is.
Sillyness here.

I agree, if that were the case it would be bad. But it’s not the case-Islamic schools and Christian school can both teach their students whatever they want about sex. So, essentially this is a non-point, pointing out the hypocrisy of an imaginary situation. Note how the ‘liberal media’ made a point in that article to mention the importance of safe sex and the spread of STDs? They are hardly giving the Muslim schools more slack than they would a Christian school.
