Bischoff Pleads Guilty to Negligent Homicide

September 8th, 2005 | by Craig |

A former Ennis doctor pleaded guilty Wednesday to a lesser negligent homicide charge for giving an elderly patient a combination of drugs that hastened her death five years ago.

James Bischoff, 47, also pleaded guilty to two felony drug charges during a brief District Court appearance. A sentencing date was not immediately set, but will likely occur within two months in Virginia City, Madison County Attorney Bob Zenker said.

I know I’m just excerpting these articles, but I’m doing this more to keep track of everything.

Bischoff was very big on “a good death” and was active in the hospice movement, or so he told me once upon a time. He made it very clear to me in a conversation once that he was in favor of having physician assisted suicide made legal everywhere.

While I appreciate in principle that there are docs around who are straightforward about the inevitability of death and who are generous with pain management, IT’S NOT THEIR DAMNED DECISION WHEN TO MAKE THAT CALL. I suspect Jim had a problem with working with family members even when his head was straight on his shoulders, and it was by no means always screwed on at all, much less straight.
