Software Stupidity

April 30th, 2005 | by Craig |

I was poking around on Apple’s website, hoping to check out some nifty movie trailers.

What I got on a lot of them was a requirement that you use Quick Time 7.

Fine, I’ll upgrade Quick Time.

Guess what, though? There’s no QT 7 to be had. WTF? Here’s a hint, Apple. Release QT 7 first, then hit people up for downloads. This is just so mind-numbingly stupid that I can’t even begin to comprehend what the marketing department was thinking. (Yes, they should be first against the wall when the revolution comes.*)

Not only that, but if you want to upgrade to the latest and greatest QT (which is not version 7, but part of the v6 series), you have to install iTunes to do it.

I used to concede a bit of moral high ground to my Mac-using friends, but I’m afraid they lost it in one fell swoop.

Jerks.

I’ll second your rant! First Real turns their player into worthless, then Windows Media becomes worthless through security problems, and now Quick Time is becoming worthless through stupidity. If I wanted I-tunes I would go download I-tunes! My internet is becoming less of a multimedia experience all the time.

M.Jones: I would suggest trying this and Real Alternative. There’s a Quicktime Alternative as well, but I don’t use it (I actually use iTunes). No more pain in the ass WMP and no loss in what you can watch.
