Eschatology
April 8th, 2005 | by Craig |For some reason, I’ve always been fascinated with end-of-the-world scenarios. Books like “The Stand,” or “Lucifer’s Hammer,” and movies like “Deep Impact,” “Armageddon,” or even “The Day After Tomorrow,” are immensely enjoyable. Even the thought of the Yellowstone Supervolcano corking off holds a morbid fascination for me.
There’s also the “Planet X” theory, which holds that there is a rogue 10th planet in our solar system which is due to whiz by soon, and tilt the Earth’s axis 90 degrees from where it is now. This knowledge was apparently imparted to a person by beings from sector ZZ Plural Beta or something like that. (I like to listen to George Noory if I’m on the road in the early hours of the morning; it’s endlessly entertaining.)
Let’s not forget that the Mayan calendar ends in 2012.
I say all this to bring up yet another end of the world prophecy; that of St. Malachy, who has predicted each Pope since 1143, and it’s interesting to note that when the new Pope is elected, he will be the penultimate one, according to Malachy.
As with any vague prophecies, you have to view this with an eye toward the tendency of people retro-fitting facts to the prophecy — especially when the prophecies are vague. (See Nostradamus). Plus, there is some controversy as to whether the predictions we have are the actual predictions of St. Malachy. Either way, it’s interesting.
Which reminds me: Are they still holding the annual End of the World Gatherings over in Corwin Springs?

Didn’t the Planet X theory go out of style two years ago?

I always forget about the CUT here in Montana…they never seem to make too much noise, or at least not since I arrived. Are they “good neighbors?”

Jeff–
Could be. I didn’t feel too compelled to keep current on the theory.
