Faith and Global Warming

Faith Leaders Seek Bill Limiting Greenhouse Gases
I’m sure this misguided request is fueled by the recent movie on global warming and world destruction. Couple comments… First, the greening of the earth can be a good thing. It’ll increase food production which seems to be a positive development given world hunger issues — ironically a concern of Christians. Visit CO2 Science Magazine to learn more about the positive effects of global warming. Second, could it be that the earth is going through a natural warming cycle? I’m not a scientist, but you don’t have to be one to know that the earth once had an “Ice Age,” so why can’t it have a “Global Warming Age?” As a Christian, I find it rather pretentious for fellow believers to demand legislation to limit greenhouse gas emissions when the scientific community is split on this issue. It seems obvious to me that these “faith leaders” are victims of Hollywood propaganda. Global warming is driven by myths, but we know that myths have power. Visit this link to read about a few myths: Myths of Global Warming. Also check out this article: Global Warming: Myth, Reality or Distraction. I think the most compelling statement in that article is: “The Earth’s climate is governed by a myriad of complex factors including solar activity, plate tectonics, natural emissions from geological features such as volcanoes, ocean currents, geography, cloud cover and the effect of gases other than CO2 in the atmosphere.” Somehow controlling a measely fraction of anthropogenic greenhouse gases is going to influence climate change on earth? As John Stossel says, “give me a break!”

Check out this post on Jimmy Akin’s blog for another theory about glogal warming.

That was good, Randy. Interesting that we both blogged on the same subject today. One thing I forgot to mention is that I believe “global warming” is just another myth used to instill fear so that people don’t object to being controlled by the gov’t. I can’t remember who said it, but “Men in the mass, when given a choice between order and disorder, will always choose order and whatever entity brings it about.” Global warming spells disorder, and gov’t will bring about order — in the minds of our enlightened “faith leaders.” Lemmings!

It is interesting how people can blind themselves to what is going on. While I don’t like to see religion get involved in environmental issues (all we need is a real cult of Gaia to create even more trouble than we have with right-wing christianity), I also am amused by the faith of those who say that the scientists are split on global warming. (See this week’s issue of Science News.) Global warming is a fact, my friends and all the faith in the world isn’t going to change that. Scientists are split on the causes, although the vast majority see human enterprises as having a strong impact. (see melting glaciers in Glacier Park which is forecast to have none in 2010 at the current rate of melting). While this may be a natural thing, it doesn’t mean that it won’t have major impacts on humans. Yes, some parts of the world my produce more food, according to Science News. it will also have more tropical diseases, such as malaria, which will invade the Pacific Coast and the southern portions of the U.S. In Montana it has already led to drier winters and longer growing seasons which is one of the very early predictions. And you can put down the latest Day After Tomorrow movie as far-fetched, but it is based on scientific speculation having to do with the Gulf Stream on the surface, the deep current that flows from the North Pole back down the East Coast and around Africa into the Pacific, and the melting of the Greenland icecap.
If you don’t read any of the mainstream scientific journals and just those who voice the polluters aspect, don’t expect to know what’s happening with global warning. Yes, the earth’s climate is governed by a myriad of factors, including a butterfly’s wings in Hong Kong, which indicates it takes but a very small change to affect the entire world. Yes, Give me a break!

I don’t think the science is unequivocal. Nor do I think it’s a good idea to base public policy on questionable science. If global warming is indeed occuring, then it’s predominantly a byproduct of natural forces. Yes, global warming — if it’s true — is a “threat” to humanity. But, the earth threatens humanity everyday. Hey, maybe it’s part of the evolutionary process???? One thing I detest is how the media, Hollywood, and academics politicize the issue.

There have been global warming cycles, even way back in the dinosaur days. For example, see the hippo fossils recently found in Britain. Which used to be tropical and may be again. Bet it would still rain every day there.

Hence the myth of the runaway process. In the real world the inertia of a hypercomplex system tends to dampen the effect of butterfly wings and the like. Thus the “butterfly effect” has been pretty well discredited. But you just keep the faith there, Chuck.

Which “scientists” are we to believe? Some are now saying that a new ice age is coming. I believe they are all just speculating- just like they did on whether eggs are good for you or not. They really don’t know jack!

Well, maybe butterfly wings is overdoing it, but chaos is still the way the weather system works—you only need to compare the day’s weather forecast with the actual failure to rain to know that. And carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses are not the small things that a butterfly’s wings are. And yes, scientists still are not sure what the eventual impact of global warming will be, but believe me, the vast majority of scientists in Scientific American, Science News, Discover and other publications believe warming is here. Now the causes and results are not certain yet. But the changes will be significant and could be an ice age under some scenarios. The thing is that science is self correcting; as it finds out more things (about eggs, for instance) its stance changes, unlike certain “faith-based” beliefs which never seem to adapt to the real world.

Yup, nature has always had periodic cycles. Now modern human technology has largely screwed up those cycles. Just keep driving excessively on those unnecessary “errands” and burning those fossil fuels and forget about greenhouse gases. What the hell. I’ll be dead long before we run out of petro and who gives a damn about our progeny anyway.
