Thoughts on Iraq
April 12th, 2004 | by Craig |Here’s just $.02 for you to chew on in re Iraq.
At this point, it’s immaterial to debate why we’re there. It won’t change the fact that we’re there.
There are those who argue that because they seem to think that it’s an illegal war, the U.S. should just immediately pull out the troops and come home. At the same time, they say that they “support the troops.”
The best way to support the troops is to give them all the tools they need to do their job, and to let them finish the job.
Then, when the insurgents are neutralized, and stability returns, we can bring our troops home.
Leaving that country while it is still in chaos would be a major disservice to both our Armed Forces, and the people of Iraq.
[UPDATE: 1116 MDT]: Here’s a Marine making my point for me, better than I ever could.

Craig, I think the contingient from the Left that wants us to pull out immedeately and come home is a small (if vocal) minority.I think the majority opinion, shared by many to the right of center as well, is that our attempts at nuetralizing the insurgents is making the problem worse. In order to finish the job, we need a better definition of what “the job” is. If the job is to restore order by killing and cowing everyone who opposes our presence in Iraq, then its likely that the job will never be done.

I think the problem is trying deal with the “insurgents” (terrorists) in a piecemeal fashion, rather than exacting swift, certain retribution upon them. If you take that approach, it doesn’t take long for them to get the message that trying to take on the US forces will most certainly earn you an eternal dirt nap.
Eventually, the Iraqis will be able to police themselves, but withdrawal at this point would cause far more problems than it would solve.

Finally someone says something that makes some sense. I don’t think any of us like what has happened in Iraq but it isn’t like a play ground where we could just pick up our marbles and go home.
