Product Endorsement

February 15th, 2004 | by mtpolitics |

It’s not often that I endorse a product, but I have to let you know that Mozilla Firefox is possibly the best browser around, especially if you are stuck using Internet Exploder.

Hardly a week goes by without some security flaw being exposed in IE, not to mention the amount of spyware you can get on your machine due to drive-by downloads.

Here’s some quick reasons why Firefox, f/k/a Firebird is great:

  • Built-in popup blocking. I’ve had exactly zero unwanted popups with Firefox. Zero.
  • Tabbed browsing. You know how you’re reading a blog entry (or something else), and they link to an article, but you want to come back to the article later. With tabbed browsing, you just do a middle-click, and Firefox opens the page in a new tab, in the background. When I go through my blogroll, I just middle click on every site the has been updated, or each newspaper site. They quietly load up while I remain on the current page.
  • Google bar? Built in.
  • Searches? Highlight some text and right-click, then choose “Web Search.” Firefox quietly opens a new tab with Google Search results.

Sure, Firefox is still < 1.0, but I use it everyday, and it quite simply kicks butt.

You may find some sites that will require you to use IE for certain animations or movie clips, but these are so few and far between that they can either be safely ignored, or you can fire up IE for one site.

Download and install Firefox. You won’t be sorry.

If all you need is the browser part, Firefox is a good choice. If you want email inclusion, go for the full Mozilla package: Bayesian (”smart”) spam filtering works like a champ :-)
Of course, if you *really* want to feel secure against viruses, security holes, and all the rest, you run Linux

There is also a standalone email client, Mozilla Thunderbird. It’s at v.5 now. I’ve been using it since .1. I like the separate programs better, as there is far less bloat, and they are quite a bit snappier separately, rather than loading the whole Mozilla beast.

Rick, I’m pretty sure that Safari (the browser I use, too) is based on the frequently-renamed Mozilla project. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure I’m not. After running Firefox on my Mac, it was hard not to notice the similarities.

Hands down, Safari is my favorite browser right now.

Firefox is best hands down. I use it exclusively.

Sorry for the double-trackback. MT doesn’t seem to handle auto-trackback pings when the posts have _lots_ of links to ping. It seems that MT wants to re-ping a subset of the trackback pings each time I edit the post.
