The Family Tree That Didn’t Branch

It’s kind of like that old joke about how “I Am My Own Grandpa.”

A member of Utah’s polygamous Kingston clan was sentenced Monday to a year in prison for taking a 15-year-old cousin — who was also his aunt — as his wife.

If she’s his aunt, then she must be either his father’s or his mother’s sister.

If she’s his cousin, then she must be a child of his father’s or mother’s siblings. (1st cousin is assumed.)

I just can’t make it work. How about you?

I know. She’s probably a more distant cousin than first cousin, but still…

    Here’s how:

By virtue of the Kingston family’s tangled web of intermarriages, LuAnn is a first cousin to Jeremy Kingston, as well as his aunt, according to prosecutors. (LuAnn Kingston’s father is Jeremy Kingston’s grandfather, and LuAnn’s mother and Jeremy’s mother are sisters.)

One of my ex’s cousin’s and I once sat down & figured out that, if rumors of various extramarital affairs in his family were true, my ex’s half-brother was his own uncle. Took us several hours to untangle that one.
