Law Trumps Common Sense

One of the things that bothers me the most about Terri Schiavo’s plight (beside the fact that her husband is so anxious to kill her) is that in this intense crusade to make her a textbook case for the right-to-kill folks, some very simple facts are being glossed over.

  1. There is no evidence, other than word of mouth that Terri had anything resembling a DNR order.
  2. Moneys won in a malpractice lawsuit were supposed to go toward rehabiliation, yet Terri received none.
  3. There are people who have repeatedly indicated their willingness to expend their resources caring for her.

I’m all for law and order, but since when is it dictated that we should sacrifice common sense and compassion on the altar of the law.

I guess that it just rings truer to me that someone’s right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness should trump some fabricated right of privacy.

This appeal from Terri’s father explains quite a bit of the background and the battles that Terri’s family have/are going through to save her from the “right to die” folks.
It’s a pdf file and eleven pages long but it is worthwhile reading.
