Question For All You Public Education Fans

December 11th, 2003 | by mtpolitics |

So, what do you do with a teacher who:

  • Projects an attitude that students are a PITA
  • Consistently – and unapologetically – breaks appointments without notifying anyone
  • Teaches demonstrably false statements
  • Will not brook contradiction in class
  • Has tenure
  • Has “risen” to the rank of Department Chair
  • Is a textbook example of the Peter Principle

I’m listening!

So Craig, when did you astrally project yourself to my alma mater and employer, San Diego State University?

Sounds like one of my professors from college.
He spent more time preaching his political agenda than the subject material.
God smiled on me that semester though, we were asked to fill out evaluations for that particular class.
Needless to say I filled mine out with a sense of malicious glee as I savaged the professor, his agenda and teaching abilities.

As Randy notes, course evaluations are one place where you can register your displeasure about the prof’s teaching deficiencies. Of course, when the prof in question is also the chair of the department, it’s a bit like spitting in the wind. There is little, if any, accountablity at that level; chances are pretty darned good that unless the department has peer evaluations of all faculty–including tenured–no other faculty will know what a loser the guy is.

But anyhow, if you college has an ombudsman, you should at least talk to him/her. You might also want tosee if the university provost has open office hours for students.

Anyone who has gone to college has had these experiences. At EMC/MSU_B I can think of only one tenured Professor who was fired and it literally took YEARS to get rid of him.

MSU_B has always been the last stop for academics who were turned dopwn for tenure elsewhere.

I have also seen a couple of pretty good Prof’s not get tenure and get sent down the road because of politics and backstabbing by theor “peers”.

Harry Truman said something about the academy being so contentious because the stakes were so low…

It wasn’t Harry Truman, it was Dick Armey.
